Building better musicians, better performers and better leaders.

A few years ago, I volunteered at a convention of college band directors. On the next to the last day of the convention, high school students are invited to come and audition with band directors for a chance at receiving a band scholarship. The auditions weren't formal. It was more of a free-for-all. Find a director, pull them to the side and hope they aren't too busy to audition you. As I was leaving one of the large ensemble rehearsals, I saw a girl and her mother. I could tell that she was in high school and she looked a little distressed. I asked her if she needed some help. She turned to me, said, "Yes, I do!", and explained that she was there to "meet every band director" she could find. She was intent on getting a scholarship for college because she knew that her mother would not be able to afford it on her own. I immediately went and introduced her to the first band director I could find. While she talked with the band director, I spoke with her mother. Her mother told me that she was so thankful that her daughter had taken the initiative to meet and audition with the different college band directors on her own. What she told me next really left an impression on me. Her daughter had made the GA All State band for the first time that year. She had auditioned for the All State band every year, but had never made it. I asked her what the difference was this year. Her mother said, "She had a private lesson before the audition. It helped her so much. If it wasn't for that one lesson, she wouldn't have made it and she wouldn't have the confidence that she has now to come here and look for these band directors!" We shared a laugh and I marveled at how much impact that ONE lesson had on her daughter. I knew then that I had to be a part of the that! Right then, the idea for the jsquared music performance center was born.

The jsquared music performance center* was created to help spread our passion for music to the youth. We want to give them the same opportunities that were given to us by our band directors and the many other musicians who taught and inspired us to become the best musicians that we could be.

With 30 years of experience playing and teaching musicians of all age levels ranging from elementary school students to college students, I know that each individual student learns in their own way. It is important to interact and listen to the student so that I know the best way to approach our learning sessions to get the desired result.

Our focus on music fundamentals such as theory, ear training, sight reading and performance fundamentals help to ensure that our students can continue to excel even after they leave our tutelage.

The jsquared performance center lays the foundation that builds better musicians, better performers and better leaders.

*The jsquared performance center is always written in lowercase because the emphasis in on our students, not the instructors. (Except for on Facebook where they wouldn't allows us to put the name in all lowercase letters.)
